I have been working in animation since 1988, always in the TV commercials sector. My roles would often be
varied as I showed my ability to be able to preform tasks in various areas. These could be anything from
animation to background design and painting, or storyboarding to FX work. The first eight years of my
animation career I was in drawn animation when all artwork was done by hand on paper and then shot on
film. As I had a technical interest in photography I was able to design rostrum camera FX.
Later on as computer technology made inroads in to the trade I gradually converted all my talents in to
computer based ones, sometimes finding myself a little ahead of the companies I was working for! Again I
would using the computer to animate, draw and paint backgrounds, produce pack artwork and anything else
that had to be prepared.
I have tended to work in different areas as I have always had a natural interest in the whole production pipe
line in both the artistic and the technical side. Being able to draw on paper though is not a skill I have lost. I
have mainly worked for small companies where I have to work virtually on my own and solve many problems
myself, but it has taught me to use my intuition.
The artwork that you see on my website and showreel is a collection of material from commercial projects
and my own, including a short film I finished three years ago and has been shown at various festivals.
Apart from the drawn character animation in some of the extracts, all of what you see has been created by
myself.
Over the past two years I have also found myself involved in traditional illustration, mainly for childrens
publications as my work is found to be appealing to that age group. The work is drawn and painted in
photoshop and painter, and is an area I wish to develop further in the future.
I have also been working on a concept for a childrens TV series, based on the characters and styling for a
short film I made a few years ago. The characters are now quite developed, and am working with an
external producer, and their contacts in further (script) development of this project.
My latest posting was as a texture artist on 'Tales of Desperaux' , a feature from Universal pictures, made at
Framestore feature animation. This was my first venture in to the world of feature animation, and my task was
texturing on 'thousands' of objects for placement within the enviroments. I enjoyed my role on the project, and
enjoyed seeing the creation of a feature from the inside.
information on myself
.....
I do enjoy looking at paintings, particularly traditional landscapes, and up to a few years ago I used to paint
my own watercolour sketches of the countryside. Until computers took over my life I used to regularly sketch
from life and at the main museums in London. Films are another big interest of mine. I enjoy watching a
mixture of big blockbusters and art films, old and recent. I also have a decent DVD collection and also
collect animation in particular on super 8 and 16mm formats, because I give film shows and have a technical
interest in projectors and the history of the cinema. Other interests of mine are popular science, transport,
gardening and cycling.
