I am most challenged and most relaxed when I am conceiving artwork, and in the process, solving problems. I am peaceful when I can patiently explore possibilities. I’m so engrossed that I lose track of time. I’m excited when I produce a great design, and exhilarated when I have an original idea.
Over the past six years, I’ve designed over 20 baseball/softball trading pins, a 4’x8’ vinyl banner, program covers, and scarves. This logo design work arose from my interests in art, sports, science, and service. I met with a designer to learn Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Working with non-profits such as Little League, UNESCO, Community Empowerment, and other sports organizations, I learned how to understand and meet client needs.
Since then, I’ve discovered the added challenge of 3D ceramics, which inspires me toward greater abstraction. My initial works looked as if I were applying my 2D designs on my ceramic pieces. Gradually, I moved towards more spontaneous and fluid designs, textured marks, and repeated lines to create unity, balance, and rhythms. The forms also began to “warp” more organically. Now, I embrace the unpredictable surprises of clay and the spinning wheel. Ceramics liberates me from over-thinking.
The central idea I’m exploring is “juxtapositions.” Varying shape, surface, and proportion in ceramics allows me to explore the tensions between:
(1) sharp-lined geometric shapes on 3D organic-shaped vessels
(2) textures on smooth forms
(3) negative vs. positive space made with form and design
(4) complex vs. minimal
(5) spontaneity vs. order
(6) thinking vs. doing
(7) craft vs. expression
I love blending the science of clay, glazes, and color with the aesthetics of form. I draw inspiration from multiple sources, including music and nature. Art allows me to integrate ideas, values, and emotions; my designs express my thoughts in a concrete form.
