James Dinverno
Born in Detroit, MI 1966, James currently creates at his Los Angeles studio in Koreatown. He received formal training at the Columbus College of Art and Design and creates within a palette of mixed media assemblage, digital painting, collage, pen and ink, oil stick wash, film, and poetry. James is a published author with two recent works in development for publication, an illustrated childrens book ‘Pearl in Fishville’ and a collection of poetry ‘ MOYEA’.
“I tend to perceive things in multiple variations. Let the mind unravel, weave through pop culture: social, political, sexual, and spiritual stimuli. My work should force the viewer to conduct an introspective peeling of their conditioned layers. Challenge their structure.”
His recent odyssey to Greece has inspired a new series of work entitled ‘MOYEA’. Within this body of work, James explores the mythical lure of the nine Greek Muses in a graphically bold, contemporary context. Curvaceous, linear women, layered over subtle tonal collage, charm the viewer into their specific aptitude of the branches of the liberal arts. Each muse conjures an erotically charged emotion, yet all are woven together in a sisterhood of divine visual bliss. Revealing the interplay of enlightened sexual desire and inspiration is the bemusement in ‘MOYEA’.
"Discarded ideas often evolve into catalysts for stagnated works. Creating a spontaneous project from this archive of fermented, truncated sketches and thoughts is always a leap of faith. I believe this act of not knowing the end result, switching to autopilot, and channeling into your visceral muse is my core drive as an artist. As Derrick Smalls once said: Perfection is the goal. Imperfection is the journey.”
