How to Promote Yourself as an Artist

By Jennifer

You have been painting since early childhood? En famille your 6-years works have been promoted as masterpieces and you continue pleasing people around with drawings that seem highly professional to everyone?

Why do you have to hide your light under a bushel if such names as Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Leonardo da Vinci, Henri Matisse, Clod Monet, Vincent Van Gogh who not only sound familiar but also present howling respect to you? Moreover, such “horrifying” terms, as expressionism, surrealism, cubism, fauvism, impressionism do not scare you to death and you feel in this sphere like a duck to water, then my first advice is not to be too shy and not to hide your talent. Real talent should have its approval. Therefore, if you have an opportunity to expose your knowledge and skills - show everyone what you can. Do not underestimate the significance of small promotion (at the place where you study, among your friends, in libraries, art clubs and so on) – it will make you more experienced in your field and may give a good start for your future career.

Do not neglect you the first opinion of your audience – the guys around you do not want to hurt you by objective critique, on the contrary, later it might help you to improve your work. It does not mean, of course, that you have to meet someone's unreasonable demands, just be wise and listen to thoughts and suggestions of others.

Give a try to all possible opportunities: participate in festivals, contests, or presentations which enable you to show your work on public.

These activities will not only give you some certain professional background, but can also advertise your paintings. Nothing promotes so much as friendly public opinion. Who knows, may be among those people coming to the contest or some other session to see your works will be a real judge of art. He or she may become interested in your paintings and your boosting is guaranteed!

Do not stop talking to people around you about your devotion to art. They may provide you with some useful information needed for your promotion.

If possible, arrange a personal exhibition of your works. Of course, this is a time and efforts-taking business, but it is worth it! Ask for someone's authoritative help. Trust me, a lot of people are seeking for talents and will eagerly agree to work with you. If you cannot find sponsors at once, do not give up! You are sure to be noticed one day.

A journey of thousands miles begins with a single step! Make this step as soon as possible!
