How to get your site listed in the ODP

The Open Directory Project is a great directory listing many useful web pages. If you get a link in the ODP it will greatly increase the number of visitors to your portfolio. Below is a simple step by step guide to add your portfolio to the directory. You can also follow these instructions to add your own personal site if you have one.

1.Find your web address (URL)

First, login into your control panel and find the address to your portfolio if you dont already know it. It should be something like “yourname.voodoochilli.net”

2.find the right page on the ODP

Head over to http://dmoz.org/Arts/Visual_Arts/Personal_Pages/
then select the letter which starts with your surname.

3. Enter your details

Press the “Suggest URL” button at the top of the page and fill in the details required on the page. Remember this page will be reviewed by a real person, so be polite and factual. Don't try to sell your work to them by saying things like “The amazing work of...”. Stick to the facts. Below is an example:

Site URL: yourname.voodoochilli.net
Site Title: Your Name's Online Portfolio
Site Description: Personal website of digital and collage artist based in the UK.

Once entered it could take anywhere from a few days to a few months for your site to be reviewed. If your work is of a specialist nature you maybe also be able to put it on other categories in the ODP. Many search engines use the ODP's data for inclusion in their own directories so it should make quite a difference to the number of visitors you get.
