My Sample Artwork
While painting it is my intent to capture a split second of the racing thoughts that fill my mind. I work from the feelings I have at the moment I am painting. Working fast and spontaneously, I try to keep up with the images and colors as they take form on the canvas. My thoughts are the underpainting over which I layer paint and drawing materials to achieve a surface worthy of expressing the complexity of thought.
I am greatly influenced by the seemingly spontaneous work of Arshile Gorky. I admire his use of line, which acts both dependently and independently of the forms and shapes in his paintings. Viewing his work (even in small scale) gives me visual fuel.

“I love this one because it reminds me of the worlds we glimpse, as children, that nobody else can see...not everything is as it first appears, and there is adventure waiting around every corner. For me, this image captures that sense of anticipation.”

“What is an adventure for an olive? At first I'm thinking a martini. But this little olive is evidently being catapulted way beyond any such earthly pleasure. I am drawn into the yellow translucent section in the middle of the picture plane. It looks like this is where it all began for this famous olive.”

“I have commissioned a painting by Susan and I love it. My friend owns this painting, Big Red, and it hangs in her studio, she's a commercial photographer. It's wall-sized and it's breath-taking! Susan is truly innovative and her paintings are powerful, passionate, and wonderfully quirky. ”
