Curriculum Vitae of Mitchell Foley
Australia, 1955-

As an artist who has always had a strong fascination with light and colour, Mitchell Foley started out as a painter, specializing mid-career in Studio Glass and then Artworks Conservation and Archaeology. In 2000 he returned to his easel and oil paints having practised in a wide range of art and glass techniques including: painting, sculpture, glass blowing and Nuclear Glass.

As an internationally acclaimed Studio Glass Artist he was amongst the pioneers in that field winning the premier prize for Sculpture in the 1st International Exhibition and Competition of the Stained Glass Association of America, Corning Museum of Glass New York, 1987. The Cocaine Series and another body of work, his portraits, see a return of Foley as Artist after an international career as an Artworks Conservator and Research Archaeologist.

Foley trained both formally and informally in Australia and Northern Europe during the 70's and 80's. In the mid 70's he worked as an Interior Design Consultant and Gallery Director in Brisbane. He then spent two years in Europe, where he furthered his training in Glass Art and studied Ancient Glass Restoration Technique. Returning to Australia in 1980, he established the Stained Glass Atelier in Sydney; Foley's work has included lecturing, conservation, consultancy work and artist in residency posts.

Mitchell Foley's Cocaine Series is a modern, innovative, artistic expression on a controversial and pressing Societal Issue. A topical series of paintings dealing with Drug Use in Society and utilizing contrapuntal Abstract Expressionism in a manner that is bound to give rise to the discussion that Foley aims at, his work is undeniably fresh whilst still speaking in an artistic language that has its roots in the well established Art of Peggy Guggenheim's mid Twentieth Century. "Ideally, I envisage" says Foley, "that these paintings hang in family homes where the questions they will raise are most pertinent. Drug use is an individual (rather than media) issue and I believe that the real answers that we (Society) need will be generated from the building blocks of our society, that is to say from within the family".

Artist Comments
Art thumbnail of Portrait of Gary Dorian Grey
“The Portrait of Gary Dorian Grey was painted entirely from a photograph. I have utilized technology extensively to produce this portrait in the belief that an Artist should embrace the cutting edge of available technology in the production of contemporary work. The subject is the CEO of a construction company and I have worked to highlight his friendly and confident manner. ”

“This style of figure painting is SO in at the moment! I love the way the man leans out of the frame. It look like mixed media, how did you make it?”
Deborah Smith

“These portraits are great! I love how you're drawn into them, and the contrast between the geometric shapes and the softness of the subjects--very modern and cool.”
Jay Max

“This is a lovely image. I especially like that the subject is very masculine yet seems to have a deep sensitivity. The hardness of his musculature contrasts with the gentleness in his eyes and expression. Can you imagine waking up next to this creature every morning? What a great way to start the day!! Kudos to the artist for capturing this.”
Patricia Spiller

“i so love your sensitive Artistic touch ! you captured this man kindness and quiet strength and this frame of silver leaves is so creative ! ”
Marilyn Servais

Art thumbnail of Gentian Alice
“Gentian Alice is one of a series of innovative and stylized portraits drawing inspiration from such diverse areas as computerized technology, Andy Warhol and Che. This portrait is of my daughter and is indicative of my work in Portraiture. Although live sessions are great, I am very happy to paint from photographs and computer images via the internet. I always like where possible to talk to the subject for a bit on the phone (or the person commissioning…) to get that deeper insight that a photograph may miss – but basically, I just love to paint portraits.”
Artist

“You make beautiful portraits.”
Carla van den Berg

“Your style is very original. I love this piece I think it shouts attitude, yet it also comes across very beautiful. Interesting composition.”
Victoria Aust

“wow that's really unusual - you really have your own syle”
Michelle Horway

“the composition is great, its like combining andy warhol and pablo piccaso. i know u used sfumato effect but its just not clear in my screen..very nicely done..”
ares

“wonderful !! it is a so refined portrait !! she is so gracious ! the grey blue camaïeu and gold create harmonious feeling ”
Marilyn Servais

“this and the chap in the hat me faves :) B”
brendan

“After viewing your work I must say I really enjoy it very much. I love portraits. It seems to me that contemporary art is still prominent, but fine arts and tons of portraitures are making a comeback. Since I don’t paint much at all, I love to view paintings. I also have an appetite for beautiful women, so for you to do a portrait of your beautiful daughter, I think it is just superb. I look forward to viewing more of your work. ”
Dan Sims

“I absolutely love all his paintings. I hope to own one, one day. Cocaine in the grass with Anne. That one tell a special story!”
Anne

“REally like this one, the atmosphere”
Angela Fernihough

Art thumbnail of Black Hat, Self Portrait
“This self portrait was first produced in my computer using Photoshop7. Several photos (spanning 20 years) were merged, filters applied, background constructed and then instead of clicking print, I picked up my brushes and painted. Most of the work and all of the Art was accomplished inside my machine, so perhaps it's Digital Art (that makes the paint craft). In any case, I've entered it into a prestigious Australian Digital Art competition and will note here how I went...”
Mitchell Foley

“your are a so talented Artist that i can't believe you wrote a so kind comment for my work , thank you very much Mitchell !!!!”
Marilyn Servais

“The title tries to take away from the point. As if it were only a Black Hat, a disguise not in anyway. A silent refrence to the back of ones own hand painted for the world that be. Not as in influence but as a ride along partner. Not an instigator not a mask. A compliment an expression an attempt to shade whats made by light ,sincere a heart that be”
christena schuler

“I do like the idea of using technology but often feel disappointed at the result of Photoshop images or at least pure computer input rather than mixing photos/scans of drawings/textures .(may be I am just not very good at using it). So it is interesting to feed the 'effects' back into'real' paint and 'the stuff of reality'.”
Simon Blundell

“No I believe using photoshop gives the final brilliance to this piece, the variation of the saturation of colour gives great contrast in the final piece.”
Timothy West

Art thumbnail of Red Square Cocaine
“From the Cocaine Series, Red Sqare Cocaine is painted in six layers. This painting is Abstract Expressionist and deals with life’s pleasantries, exploring how they overlay, sometimes juxtaposing and other times obliterating each other to form aspects of our totality. ”
Mitchell Foley

“I am very much encouraged by your comment on my photograph, 'Where A Little Girl Dances Erotica'. To say that it is an Artwork with a powerful message, from an acclaimed artist, really does inspire me to create more. I am humbled by your achievements. Now, about this painting, Red Square Cocaine- - The title is a good one. It directs the message of the painting. I feel that the red squares is concealing something that it could not conceal, hence the space within the square, as if drastically cut. And the red square is dynamic, which is for me a metaphor of the dynamics of what a drugged person sees. This is the illusion of drugs. But the truth is, every drug user is concealing something, patching up with chemicals what the psyche could not endure.”
Adelle Victoria

“this piece speaks to me about the obscurentism , not only the one wished by people who need power , from the old ages to our present, but also , the "blind state of mind" of people who doesn't want to explore further to know what is hiding behind all things( soory for my english ) ”
marilyn servais

“Your portraits kick a**, you capture their character, which is the point. I'm bathed in the suffusion of this, the surface and color is like fine dining. I'd like to see it in person, because I'm sure the paint handling rocks solid earth.”
Joan Schlough

“Red Square Coccaine symbolizes what I see as a hole poked fun at situation that has relivancy to lives and worlds alike. I am only a tiny perspective whos point of view sights this piece as blood on everybodys hands. Its creator a divining rod filtering its own masses has taken hemoglobin from his own cup and smeared it on laws of expression so when it becomes time for all to drink, perhaps intermediate devistation might equal to a glass of spilled milk. ”
christena schuler

Art thumbnail of Red Jet
“Lazy, Bored & Hungry. This is a portrait of my 19 y.o son Jet. Seems like the Cocaine series is over as these portraits are really starting to crack in. Jet was photographed and photoshoped for hours and hours to get the achromatic image which I then painted onto a dramatic red background. The technique for the b'ground is to copiously splash hot water onto dark red oil wash coat over lighter red dry coat. I call this technique Gordon, 'cause it reminds me of cheese. gorgonzola cheese, but then you wouldn't call a technique gorgon, would you? ”
Artist's Comment

“"Gorgon" technique ! LOL why not ? ART is freedom ! this portrait of your son is very very nice , "the red siuts him so well " !”
marilyn servais

“This is really good and well done good job! You really captured him well. ”
Tala

“Wauw, Jet turned into a gorgeous guy! What a few years can do to a little boy. I love this portait!”
Anne

Art thumbnail of Cocaine in the Grass with Anne
“your title is poetic (to me)maybe it has a special meaning that i don't know ! anayway , ypur painting speaks to me of feeling and souvenirs confusion , and emotivity troubles ”
marilyn servais

“It does have a special meaning. It is a memory of a great day. Shakespeare in the park, if I remember correctly. Good memories..”
Anne

Art thumbnail of Cocaine on a Rainy Day
“Painted in six layers, Cocaine on a Rainy Day is representative of how the drug cocaine washes over reality with its own layers and influence to create what is perceived as a new, fast paced and delicately detailed reality, often with pleasant accentuations for the individual. The real work of the painting is beneath and between the layers, and this speaks to the superficial but subliminal effect that the drug engenders. I have purposely refrained from moralising comment with this piece as it is intended to generate intelligent discussion on the important and broad social issue of drug use. It does contain Cocaine. Ideally, I envisage this painting hanging in a family home where the questions it raises are most pertinent. ”
Artist\'s Comment

“mmmmmmmm. I like”
christena schuler

“drugs are everywhere , from the less dangerous to the most one , they alter perception , i suppose that raindrops as feelings become bigger and bigger ”
marilyn servais

Art thumbnail of Tsunami Cocaine
“Nice texture. I was just thinking how expensie it would be to paint with reall Cocaine. This painting would be worth thousands just in raw materials. Good work, keep it up.”
Harry O\'Connor

“love the texturess and pattern here mitcell the original must shine, the word is lovely”
gregory gallo

“the title is very good and your painting is submerging us with beauty ”
marilyn servais

“This is a very nice piece. I like the mixture of colors, awesome!”
Fernando

“I went to jail for 3 and a half years after painting the Cocaine series. Oh, Man! what a trip. Yes, it was painted with real cocaine.”
Mitchell Foley

Art thumbnail of Cocaine for Jet
“This painting is inspired by a Father's love for his son. I'm the father and my son is Jet and whilst he is not involved with drugs, the painting contains extreme profanity and Cocaine. Painted in six layers, Cocaine for Jet is representative of how the drug cocaine washes over reality with its own layers and influence to create what is perceived as a new, fast paced and delicately detailed reality, often with pleasant accentuations for the individual. The real work of the painting is beneath and between the layers, and this speaks to the superficial but subliminal effect that the drug engenders. I have purposely refrained from moralising comment with this piece as it is intended to generate intelligent discussion on the important and broad social issue of drug use. Ideally, I envisage this painting hanging in the family home where the questions it raises are most pertinent and confronting. ”
Artist\'s Comment

“ it looks innocent and holy like, almost relating to unfairness in the world, I can always twist the perspective some way cant I Mitchell”

“This is really different and I love it way to go Uncle Mitch”
Tala

“Mitchell I have very limited experience of drug use.. the occasional puff from the pipe of a heavily addicted pot philosopher friend I once used to play crazy role playing games with, left me useless for anything the whole weekend long! However I can relate to layers of consciousness and other worldlyness which this seems to speak of. I like the roughly hewn marks describing the cross. I once lay on a French beach watching the stars and was accosted by teenagers wanting to know what I was on... They thought it 'cool' when I responded fresh air.”
Simon Blundell

“wow ! this is a very unique way to express cocaine ravage ! and your talent impresses me greatly Marilyn”
marilyn servais

Art thumbnail of Portrait of Nico
“Amazing what having a bit of insight into your work (re email) does for the appreciation of this new image. I have all kinds of my own connections now that feed the understanding ,for me of your work. To me the holding of the head refers to the universe within. She has a kind of far away look in her eyes but one that is quite calm and cool (as if meditating) something borrowed from Rodin's Thinker... with the layers of border forming the separate induced experiences.. I do wonder though at such a peaceful tranquility not making someone think I would like to try that...if it makes me look like that. But then maybe they would look at all kinds of other options to get to this state also..”
Simon Blundell

“hi Mitchell i am sorry to have been away from voodoo so long ! i am happy to see more of your beautiful works here ! this portrait is as wonderful as always , i love the blue-grey color abainst the "beige" and grenat and the dreamy expression of this nice girl face ”
marilyn Servais

“I haven't seen this one before. Can you tell me how you got the vector look on the girls face? Was it photoshop or illustrator? Good work. cheers Harry O'Connor”
