The images are black or have gone or
The site thinks the image is not a JPEG

The Internet only understands standard RGB (red-green-blue) JPEGS, but often images are saved as CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-black). In an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop make sure your images are RGB.

In Photoshop go to

Image>Mode>RGB

» What is a JPEG

A 'JPEG' or 'JPG' is a file format used to save images. It is often used on the web because of its excellent compression ratio. When saving an image as a JPEG you will normally be given a choice to how much compression you want to save the file with. Remember your file sizes only have to be smaller than 150 kilobytes so it is probably not worth saving with very high compression as this will seriously degrade the quality of your image.

» Creating jpegs

To upload your images you need to ensure they are saved in a JPEG (aka jpg) format. To do this open a image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop, and then do the following:

Select FILE>OPEN
Browse for your file and open it

» Reducing image sizes

All images need to be less than 150k in size to be accepted on the site. This is for two main reasons, firstly this reduces the time the images will take to load when viewed and secondly it stops copying of hi resolution images.

Firstly ensure you have saved your image as a JPEG

To make your image smaller in an image editing program such as Adobe Photoshop SELECT IMAGE SIZE from the menu. Ensure your images is set to 72 dpi and pixel dimensions are smaller than 800x600.

» Promoting your portfolio

Promoting your portfolio is essential to getting lots of people to see your work and possibly offer you commission.

This can be achieved in a variety of ways including telling people you know about your portfolio, getting people to link to your page and submitting your page to directories and search engines (you must add a "/index.htm" at the end of the URL ie. www.voodoochilli.net/artists/yourname/index.htm)

Some sites worth submitting to are:

dmoz.org
Google

Yahoo
Altavista
Exicite

You could also use the link on other promotional material such as postcard's and business cards etc.

» Protecting your images

We have already implemented a few devices to try and protect your images, however there are ways people can try and steal your images. Be aware of the following things when uploading your images.

Keep your images to screen quality, so that people will not get a decent print if they try and steal your work. Keep your image sizes low.

You could watermark you images, either using digital watermark technology, or simply by putting your name across it.

Always keep a back up of your images

Prove your copyright- prove that you created those images and when. One suggestion is to send your images to yourself via recorded mail, don't open the envelope!
