Description/Technique: Sarah Lauder created the washing machine from foam blocks and covered the sculpture with pieces of bed linen. The 28-year-old said: “I’ve always had an interest in domestic objects. With this piece I tried to break it up in my head so that the washing machine becomes something without a function. “We are constantly doing housework and it becomes a routine in our lives. I have two young children and I am either at university or doing domestic chores. I deliberately made the washing machine’s surfaces rough and textured to show that my life has not been a smooth one and there have been many ups and downs.” This year graduating Visual Arts students will also be showcasing their work in Free Range 09 from 17 - 26 July, at The Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London.
