We CAN make a difference

On March 29th, 2008 at 8pm local time Earth Hour will commence ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a POWERFUL MESSAGE about the need for action on global warming.

Be part of making Earth Hour 2008 a huge, global success by telling your friends and family. Remember, every single light makes a statement and makes a difference.

Last year, on 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney (Australia) businesses turned off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney’s energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.

It can all make a difference.

i dont know how many ppl think about it, but slowly i believe it reaches everybody of us.we start noticing lights on...we start using less water for one or another reason..we start finding reasons to go to work or a friend by bike, not by car...slowly...baby steps, but the baby grows Smile

I think the solution to the problem that is our energy crisis simply lies within the over population of the world. If we could find a way to reduce this without resorting to genocide then our presence on the planet is less harmful to it.

Maybe if we could shrink down like in Honey I Shrunk The Kids then the world would in effect be bigger. That does pose the problem of giant insects...
I'll have to have a think.

BUT WAIT! This our thing where every stops using lights or electricity for an hour- is local time local to our countries or our planet? Or star system?

You know if too many people change the channel at the same time there's a power surge and it burns my toast.

True enough Samuel,
I have been a big supporter of zero population growth for about 28 years. I have been preaching it to mostly deaf ears. You get, "well a person should be able to have as many kids as he/she can afford, right?" and "Well the god lord wanted us to be fruitful and multiply, so why can't we?" Unfortunately short-sighted selfishness has gotten us into the predicament. Now we have to find ways as Samuel mentioned, short of genocide, to deal with this.

It is a sad pass to have come to.

Great Post, cheers.

I don't think population is the key problem here, it is resources being used by the rich countries. Yes I know countries like India and China are now using more than before (especially for industry) but most of these people consume a tiny fraction of what we consume. The big countries like the USA, Japan, the UK, Canada, Germany, France and most of Europe simply need to consume less.

A family doesn't need 3 cars - its convenient thats all. The car doesn't need 4 wheel drive, fuel injection and a 3 liter engine, its just desired. When was the last time you saw a 4 x4 drive up a mountain anyway? I see them driving little Timmy to school half a mile away. I seem to remember walking to the bus stop.

Sorry to rant, but this issue really gets me big time. Turn your light of when ever you don't need it, not just for 1 hour! Does the heating need to be on when you are out? Can you get a bus to work? Yes to all of these things but people just can't be arsed - because essentially they don't care - We say we care, but do we really do anything. Would we care more if it cost us money?

To put it into perspective, people in 1st world countries overall consume 32 times that of people in 3rd world countries. The majority of the world's population are living in 3rd world countries.

Good points Harry,
We are all guilty of excess. I have to travel alot for photography and I have a big truck and a camper for my long trips. I could get a small car and stay in hotels but I like to sleep in my own space.
In turn my wife and I are designing our home to be built on her family land in North Carolina and I have gone geothermal and solar in design. My hope is to change my truck to biodesiel as it becomes more available.

True, Harry, the causes are more complex than just boiling down to one issue like population. Although it doesn't help matters for more people to be consuming more resources at an ever increasing rate, I agree with you that the richest countries are the worst offenders. There exists a feeling of entitlement here in the US. It makes me mad. Like I mentioned, we carpool whenever we. Bicycling is also good and we do that. We almost never buy paper towels and other disposable convenience items. Especially paper plates and plastic-ware.

One of my biggest issues is that I hate turning off my computer each time I am away. I have this attitude that it goes to sleep, so it uses less energy. The fact is that it still uses energy and I should shut it down when I am not using it.

The news is bleak lately with terms like "Global Warming" "Global Recession" and the like being knocked about in the press. We can all do little things in little ways to make a big difference for every one.

Take care.

I totally agree with you Harry, I do my best each day to think of new recycle projects or save resources both power and water.
I walk locally uo to a mile before using the car.
But I think one of the answers is more of us have to do these things.
Each of us do make a difference but it would be more beneficial if we all did it.
Maybe us as artists could get the message across. Could be idea for new competion.

Franklin as for turning off your computer; when I studied IT (but is was long time ago) I was informed to boot up your computer used more electricity than to leave on standby.
I dont know whether this has changed with new technology in computers or does this still stand.
Is there any technos out there who could help me here?
What is the best way to conserve power turn off computer or leave on standby during working hours?
Much appreciate an answer folks

Here is a long winded exlpanation. Basically energy saver modes use about 15% of the energy of a running computer. So turing it off when not using it for a long time is useful in thatit isn't using any energy. According to this site, the small surge in energy is less of a drain then leaving it running for a short amount of time. Smile

I hope this helps.

This administration is so horribly corrupt and morally bankrupt it isn't even funny. It used to be that when a President got in that was incompetent, you'd have a laugh at him and he would be out next term. Unfortunately for reasons discussed fully quite a lot this bugger stayed around for a second term. I think he is patently evil. I think Cheney is even worse.
Every day I sign petitions here trying to drag the corruption of this Government into the light. I sign petitions for them to do something about Darfur. I call my Representatives.I have signed multiple petitions calling for impeachment of these two fools.
It is very frustrating as an AMerican citizen, who loves his country and the Constitution, to see these morons ruining all that makes this country great on a daily basis.
Thanks for the story Harry. I am a member of a couple of conservation groups here and they are also addressing this issue.
I wish I could draw into existence a world without Bus and Cheney or their ilk in it. I guess I will be doing that when I vote this year.
Sigh.
There really are decent Americans who work diligently to right the wrongs our current Government perpetrates on the world.

I think like Franklin says, there is this feeling that we are entitled to do what we want at the expense of the environment. As I was saying to my partner the other day, if we didn't eat cows, drink their milk and make clothes out of them, then they would be an endangered species - you would pay good money to view one in the Zoo or nature reserve. Instead we have too many cows which are contributing to deforestation and global warming through their farts! Crazy when you think about it.

Man kind used to respect the land, but for hundreds of years this has changed. My mother to this day thinks flowers are there to be pretty and smell nice and birds are their for our amusement alone. It doesn't occur to her that their genetic code has evolved just as long as ours and they have the same right to exist as we do.

The simple fact is people care more about money than everything else put together. We care more about arbitrary numbers stored in a computer at our banks than the planet as a whole. If peoples incomes were proportional to the state of the environment, the world would be a better place, but it isn't. The people who make the most money, generally make it by trading part of the planets well being, and with their profits they spend it on further destruction.

It saddens me greatly too that people still say global warming isn't happening, or that its natural. I don't know why I'm still talking about the subject but I guess its better to talk about it than not too. Maybe things will change over the next few years - I hope so.

I am hopeful as well. Awareness is growing and more and more people are doing little things to make a difference. One thing that will happen and facilitate a paradigm shift in the way we look at things is for the old guard to start dying out. This my sound morbid, but their psyches are so imprinted with the old way of thinking, that it is hard for them to believe this world is really as small and fragile as it is. Of course there are exceptions to this rule.
y wife and I take care of her elderly mother. And it took us two years to convince her to stop asking for us to buy paper plates, plastic cups, and plastic forks, spoons and knives. She couldn't see the harm in it. It was inconceivable to her that these little items could add up to be one big pile of harmful waste. We didn't even try to explain about the gasses emitted as the plastic breaks down.

You are quite right Harry. Those with the most money/power do the most harm. I guess they develop the idea that no matter how bad things get for the rest of us, they will have the means to survive because of their elevated status and power. Too bad for them that if they don't do something, their children will suffer right along side everyone else. Sigh...
Ok Now I am going to go look at pictures of happy fluffy bunnies for a while or something. ;)
