Have you seen a movie lately?

Well this could be a place to tell others about it. The idea is to post the name of a movie in theaters now and a review of it. Movies are an art form and this will give us a chance to look at film like that and share our views with each other. Hopefully it will help us to see some good ones and avoid some stinkers. With movie prices at $10 here it is best to avoid the bad ones!

I'll start with "There Will Be Blood" written by Paul Thomas Anderson and based on "Oil" by Upton Sinclair.

This movie is a story of the early American "oil Rush" it is the story of one man's desire to be the biggest oil man out there. This grizzly tale is harsh, brutal, touching, and well told. It is at it's heart a character study of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview. It's run time of 2 hours 35 minutes might seem like a big commitment, but it doesn't seem to last that long. Surprising, shocking and bold this film is a must see.

I really identified with the main character at points. Then not so much at other times.

It is nominated for 8 oscars and although I am not usually one to follow the critics, this movie is fabulous. I will be first in line to buy the DVD when it comes out.

Yes, much like Ringo provided the beat, George provided the rhythm, Paul provided the melody, John provided the lyrics, and Yoko provided the fear factor. lol

And Brian ran the show, and George Martin helped hone the sound.

Hopefully Apple will release the missing Beatle films at some point...

OK if you want a fairly original, but totally unbelievable fun ride of a movie and you liked "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" check out "Shoot 'Em Up"
It was a fun movie with a few surprises!

I'm going to have to disagree with you there as I really didn't like Shoot em up. You can't please them all.

I saw Iron Man over the weekend. Big flashy fx fest with a uncomplicated narrative. It was ok. Basically what I expected. I will confess to a "Cool" moment when I first saw the suit in action. Sad I know. My comic buff friend thought it was great and apparently a good start to inevitable franchise.

I thaught Shoot 'em up would be a great movie to sit at home and watch with a huge greasy takeaway!

I also recently saw Doomsday, and same again, its a home alone with a takeaway kind of movie, a little like Mad Max meets Lara Croft.

I'm kinda burnt out on the Pulp Fiction clones. Even Tarantino doesn't do them anymore.

Luckily "Shoot 'Em Up" wasn't "Pulp Fiction" nor did it try to be. It was a ridiculous action comedy with some wonderful gags. Nothing so broody as "Pulp Fiction" It was simply a fun ride. It didn't try and be "War and Peace" It was just a good laugh.

Kind of like Snatch, Eight Heads in a Duffel Bag etc. I'm talking about the chop-chop editing, insert hip song underworld thriller with dark comedy. They were alright for a while, but imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery. Hey, Michael Ritchie got Madonna out of the deal, tho. lol

I was going through my DVD's the other day and came across one of my favourite films ever,,, Id like to share with it you....

'Chrystal Voyager' by George Greenhough

A fantastic film for Surfers...sailors...and photographers.

George invented a prototype camera which he attached to himself while surfing through tunnels in waves...all done to the music of 'Pink Floyd'

Well worth a viewing Smile

I watched "I am Legend" the other day. It was good for a simple Hollywood film. Not a lot to discuss, not a lot of plot...just run a away from the bad guy scenario. In this case the bad guy was a diseased and dangerous humanity.

The last scene of "There Will Be Blood" was great. And the last line was very funny...for dark humor.

I also liked the last line for the film "Fight Club"...that was a great ending...equally dark humor.

Yeah both of those were excellent flicks. They are both in my collection along with:

Blade Runner
Dogville
Fifth Element
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Big Fish
Nightmare Before Christmas
Baraka

We watched "I Am Legend" in the theatre. On DVD, we got the double disk version, which included the original version as well as the theatrical. The original version had an ending which suffered on plausability, but it was better then the theatrical release. I suppose the test audience had trouble with it, so the director had it reworked, but they went too far. Without revealing the alternate ending too much, the Dark Seekers showed grace and understanding in a confrontational situation, stiffeling the urge to feed in favour of social gratitude. After watching both versions, the original version was the favorite in our family even with the "yeah, sure" factor.

Both versions though are very good films. Good entertainment, without the usual gore and swearing that the studios seem to assume we want in our films.

I'm gonna get my zombie-on too, tonight. Got Legend and Day of the Dead double bill. Gives me a 50% chance one will be good. Perfect night to make spaghetti in a heavy tomato sauce!

Very funny Joseph. I have 30 days of night and I am Legend at home. Those are next on my watch list.

Well, my suspicions were confirmed. The cheapy Day of the Dead was fun, and Legend was slow and self-absorbed. Day had hyper-fast zomb's(but always slow enough for the heroes to get a good head shot), lots of gore and enough sick jokes(tho not as funny as some other entries in the series).

I'll take Omega Man over Legend. Heston did what every guy would do, live it up.
"Get your paws off of me, you damn dirty zombies!"

Charlie Wilsons War:

Watch this movie with subtitles if you are to get anything Tom Hanks mutters throughout the film in his trying Texan accent.... successfully learning to speak without opening his mouth for this role.

..meanwhile..Philip Seymour Hoffmans is delightful in his role.

A potentially good historical drama (accuracy not fully known by me though - haven't researched it yet)... but not without flaws...

I would watch again though... with subtitles.. to try and get more of the details from the start.
