Have you seen a movie lately?

Well this could be a place to tell others about it. The idea is to post the name of a movie in theaters now and a review of it. Movies are an art form and this will give us a chance to look at film like that and share our views with each other. Hopefully it will help us to see some good ones and avoid some stinkers. With movie prices at $10 here it is best to avoid the bad ones!

I'll start with "There Will Be Blood" written by Paul Thomas Anderson and based on "Oil" by Upton Sinclair.

This movie is a story of the early American "oil Rush" it is the story of one man's desire to be the biggest oil man out there. This grizzly tale is harsh, brutal, touching, and well told. It is at it's heart a character study of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview. It's run time of 2 hours 35 minutes might seem like a big commitment, but it doesn't seem to last that long. Surprising, shocking and bold this film is a must see.

I really identified with the main character at points. Then not so much at other times.

It is nominated for 8 oscars and although I am not usually one to follow the critics, this movie is fabulous. I will be first in line to buy the DVD when it comes out.

Sounds kinda like a movie from the 70s "Oklahoma Crude" starring Faye Dunawaye. If I remember right, Jack Palance livened up a rather tedious film. No new films ever seem to be original, and I didn't like the showboat release time of this film. But, on your recommend, I'll at least catch it on DVD.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially the parts where I sat cringing!

'I've seen clips of that (Jesse James thingly) on the Culture Show (BBC2,Sat)and it looks reely good so been looking out for it on DVD (and I don't even like westerns)'

I caught that show too, which is unusual; becuase the Culture Show usually clashes with something else i'm doing... but I have just fitted adapter for Freeview and most programes are repeated at later times makes life so much easier.
I have not watched so much TV including old films and classic TV programes Morse,Upstairs Downstairs... all after working hours... Its been great!!

just turned off 'eastern promises' halfway through because it was so depressing and poorly acted, shame because a couple of the actors have been in really good films previously and had good reviews

I've been debating renting "Eastern Promises". I like the premise, Russian gangsters, etc. but I'm not a big fan of David Cronenberg. He has a rather long history of films that were supposed to be good, and weren't. Videodrome and Naked Lunch spring to mind. Maybe I'll skip it.

Just saw "The Life Aquatic". Although I love Bill Murray, this movie was slow and plodding. I like quirky movies, but this one tried way too hard. It's the story of a Jaques Cousteau type of guy who's partner is killed by a "Leopard Shark". He decides to hunt the shark and kill it. This is the story of what happens. although parts made me laugh out loud it was strictly a mediocre movie. 3 out of 5 stars.

Just saw "The Other Boleyn Girl" About Henry Tudor and the Boleyn sisters. I don't know if it was historically accurate or not, but I do know that is was overly dramatic in places that didn't make any sense to me. I admit that I usually do not like "Period Pieces" but I have seen good ones. I liked "Elizabeth" (ironically). Anyway, much of the motivation of this movie was unbelievable, it was too dramatic in mundane situations, and Natalie Portman doesn't pull off her part well. I'd say it gets aroun 3.5 stars out of 5. Above average, barely, but no masterpiece.

You lucky beast Franklin ,
I love the one sister ......she played the Girl with the Pearl Earing; I think she is a wonderful, underated actress.

The film is on the rounds here but dont know whether I'll have time to go to cinema to watch it; at present.
But will look out Dvd

Just watched "Everything is Illuminated" on DVD for the second time. The movie is about a Jewish man who returns to the Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. It is a great film.

The second great thing about this film is the sound track. It is friggin' brilliant. it features Eastern European music. The stand out band has become one mf my favorites. Gogol Bordello. Eugene Hutz, Gogol's front-man, is a costar in the film. He does a great job as an actor as well.

Just watched "Letters from Iwo Jima" last night. I never was a big fan of war films set in the Pacific theatre, but this one was told from the enemy's point of view, so it gave it an interesting twist. The Japanese cast was excellent, and although slight on battle scenes and heavy on drama, it still was entertaining. I'd rather watch WWII set in Europe, tho. It always seems more epic.

Boy, that No Country for Old Men was excellent. I had no problem with the enigmatic ending. It kind of reminded me of Sam Peckinpah's Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. Super violent, but intelligent at the same time. I don't know if Javier Bardem was Oscar worthy, but he definitely was watchable. As bad as a lot of new movies are, it's probably easy to win with a little effort.

I really didn't like no country for old men. It was good at the start and kind of felt like a Clint Eastwood film, then as all films do it started to build up to something, and then at the climax it just flopped. Call it "art" if you want to but a film that goes nowhere and has a dull ending for the sake of it doesn't rate that highly to me. It gave the impression of an action film, but didn't pull it off in my opinion. I reckon a lot of people are being forgiving to this film because of the Coen Brothers. All in all I would rate it 5.5/10 - Good acting and nice cinematography but the story itself was badly executed and felt like a let down.

Instead of films (as I cant find any good ones) I have been reverting to old copies of Red Dwarf. I have re watched every episode up to season 5 now - probably wont see the last ones as they weren't as good in my opinion.

Did you know that they actually started production of red dwarf in America - it looks terrible. (I have some clips on the extras section of my dvd). Apparently its the same sort of story except its all clean cut - not about space bums at all. Sort of red dwarf storyline but acted by the people of the freinds series. Needless to say it never took off.

Anyway, as a sci-fi addict I need some more sci-fi series's. Any suggestions? I have seen all star trek, stargate, babalon 5.

I didn't really view No Country as an action film. I think that's the way the studio may have been trying to market it, but it's more of a drama interspersed with violence. Nowhere did it remind me of Eastwood/Bronson/Stallone. All of there films are fairly slow-paced. Look at Fargo or Blood Simple. I think you really have to spend some time in Texas, to really get this film.

Red Dwarf. I always liked the "Rimmer" song and the star's appetite for curries. lol

Stayed up last night and watched Ten Commandments on the tube. As hokey as that flick is, I still get a kick out of watching it. John Derek(ex-husband/pimp of Bo Derek-Ursula Andress-Linda Evans) as Moses' second -in-command Joshua. Edward G. Robinson in a robe. Great mis-casting. Politically incorrect lines and scenes everywhere. The special effects still look better than some of the new movies. Bible stories on acid. Can't wait to see it again next year. :D
