Well this could be a place to tell others about it. The idea is
to post the name of a movie in theaters now and a review of it.
Movies are an art form and this will give us a chance to look at
film like that and share our views with each other. Hopefully it
will help us to see some good ones and avoid some stinkers. With
movie prices at $10 here it is best to avoid the bad ones!
I'll start with "There Will Be Blood" written by Paul Thomas Anderson and based on "Oil" by Upton Sinclair.
This movie is a story of the early American "oil Rush" it is the story of one man's desire to be the biggest oil man out there. This grizzly tale is harsh, brutal, touching, and well told. It is at it's heart a character study of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview. It's run time of 2 hours 35 minutes might seem like a big commitment, but it doesn't seem to last that long. Surprising, shocking and bold this film is a must see.
I really identified with the main character at points. Then not so much at other times.
It is nominated for 8 oscars and although I am not usually one to follow the critics, this movie is fabulous. I will be first in line to buy the DVD when it comes out.

If you like surfing movies have you seen 'Chrystal Voyager' by Surfing photographer George Greenhough....
Well worth watching just for the artistic shots and the amazing back track sound by Fleetwood Mack (I think ..ill check)

Just saw this last week, and it is
awesome. I'm not a big Lewis
fan(especially after Gangs of New
York and Last of the Mohicans), but
this was definitely an Oscar worthy
performance. Unfortunately, it came
out the same year as No Country for
Old Men, and I'm not a fickle
critic. hahaWell this could be a place to tell others about it. The idea is to post the name of a movie in theaters now and a review of it. I watched the Will Ferrell film
"Semi-Pro" last night. I was in the
mood to laugh. It wasn't very good.
The premise was good. Will Ferrell played a "one-hit wonder" funk musician who took his mega-hit earnings to purchase a semi-pro basketball team in Flint, Michigan. Being the owner, he made himself the coach, player, and promoter. He ran the team into the ground. A lot of opportunity for comedy in the plot, but it didn't happen very often. I think the timing was off...and the writing.
You could definitely skip this one.

I had already made plans too. I thought you said you were in the mood to laugh? When did Ferrell ever qualify for that?
Just another SNL has-been who needs to get into another line of work, or retire.

Hey Joseph,
"Talladega Nights, the Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and "Elf" were both funny films. Other than that I'd have to agree.
I took a stab at "Semi-Pro" thinking it might have been an overlooked yet brilliant comedic film ( it had a very brief run in theaters)...well it wasn't. I actually took the time to watch it a second time to see what I might change in the film...I fell asleep half way through.
In retrospect, I think it could have hit a 2 1l2 or 3 star rating (out of 5) with a better comedic editor in post production.

I can take him in small doses, if
that. The last small dose I liked
him in was Zoolander. But when he
tries to carry a film by himself,
he wears thin quicker than $3
shoes.
He suffers from Bill Murray disease. Comedians who are funny in ensemble casts, but stink on ice by themselves. Like Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Jay and Silent Bob, Harold and Kumar, etc. Some are cured by obscurity - Pauly Shore, Yahoo Serious, Paul Hogan. Some are never cured - Steve Martin, Robin Williams.
Even Murray eventually wised up, and went back to being part of the team effort.
Some comedians could make an entire career out of being themselves - like Laurel and Hardy - but that was a long time ago.

11th Hour - the environmental movie
by Leo DiCaprio. I was a little
weary about it, but turns out it's
pretty amazing! Definitely a very
depressing movie, but great
information and leaves you with
some hope at the end.
Also - Zeitgeist
Incredible. Can't be described in words. Check it out.
