Well this could be a place to tell others about it. The idea is
to post the name of a movie in theaters now and a review of it.
Movies are an art form and this will give us a chance to look at
film like that and share our views with each other. Hopefully it
will help us to see some good ones and avoid some stinkers. With
movie prices at $10 here it is best to avoid the bad ones!
I'll start with "There Will Be Blood" written by Paul Thomas Anderson and based on "Oil" by Upton Sinclair.
This movie is a story of the early American "oil Rush" it is the story of one man's desire to be the biggest oil man out there. This grizzly tale is harsh, brutal, touching, and well told. It is at it's heart a character study of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview. It's run time of 2 hours 35 minutes might seem like a big commitment, but it doesn't seem to last that long. Surprising, shocking and bold this film is a must see.
I really identified with the main character at points. Then not so much at other times.
It is nominated for 8 oscars and although I am not usually one to follow the critics, this movie is fabulous. I will be first in line to buy the DVD when it comes out.

I have not seen August Rush yet. I
intend to at some point though.
There are plenty of reviews on the Net. Check out rotten tomatoes at http://www.rottent omatoes.com/m/august_rush/ (they give it a low score) and IMDb at http://www.imdb.com/title/ tt0426931/ (they give it a good score).

I saw wo terrible movies recently.
Both on DVD. Beowulf and The
Brothers Grimm. Beowulf was a 14
year old boys re-imagining of the
poem. The humor was so tasteless
and sophmoric, I began to think I
was watching Porky's 6! I was at
least hoping for some good visuals
but the animation was about the
quality of a middle of the road
video game cut away scene.
The Brothers Grimm was a rambling, no meandering walk through the highlights of some of our best loved fairy tales with a dark twist of evil thrown in. It never made up it's mind what kind of movie it wanted to be and seemed like it was thrown together in a hurry and without much thought.

description of a film ...I shall
put on my noway watch list...( I
trust your critisism.)
Thank you very much Franklin for sharing your thoughts on this truly bad movie.

Wasn't the big sales point with
Beowolf, the animated sort of nude
scene with Angelina Jolie? I guess
she was supposed to be half lizard
or something. I'll pass.

Just saw a freaky little film
called The Begotten (1991) It's
kind of like Eraserhead, and has
some bizarre(if not downright
nauseating) allegorical scenes.
Artsy and fartsy, mixed with some
really rough stuff. Hard to find,
tho, but catch it if you do.

I watched the Hitchhikers' Guide to
the Galaxy recently which in my
humble opinion did not do the great
Douglas Adams justice. However last
night while desperately trying to
hit a deadline I came across the
1981 TV series on youtube. I know
this is a movie thread but on this
one occasion I would like to submit
this for your consideration. I
suspect that some may be horrified
by the the poor special fx the bbc
had at it's disposal back then but
it more than makes up for it in
substance. Bar one character it was
a batter cast and better
performances than their recent
movie counterparts. It made my
night of work which has only just
come to an end (that's right! I've
been awake for 28 hours now) more
enjoyable. I hope you like it
although I think the people from
the uk may enjoy this more. I'm not
sure how well known the novel is
internationally.

Hi Ian. Hope you get some rest
soon!
Yes the recent film was rubbish! Well it didn't do the books justice and like you say the 1980s series was much better!
I want to watch some Zombie movies I reckon. Can anyone recommend any? think I've asked this before. Loved 28 days later, Shawn of the dead, dawn of the dead etc. Not really into old Zombie flicks from the 70s and I hated Dead Alive. Will have to google it.
By the way, check out some of the films on www.filmsoftruth.com . Zeitgeist is worth watching.
That reminds me, I need to send and email to Arthur about that!

As usual (for the various
HitchHiker's Guide incarnations)
the film is not a literal
translation of any other form of
the story.
It is important to note that this film was in the works since the 80's and Douglas Adams wrote at least three drafts of the film. All of the new ideas and characters came from Douglas Adams himself. The writer Karey simply came aboard to improve structure and make the screenplay more coherent.
The first time I watched the film, it was not too thrilled with it, but... I quickly warmed up to it.

Dawn of the Dead, Harry. Either
version, or both if you want.
They trashed a BBC series a few years ago, The Singing Detective. The series was a great piece of work, which ran about 12-16 hours(don't remember exactly). Very surrealistic and clever.
They tried to compress it into a 2 hour movie with Robert Downey. It just didn't work. Plus, the droll British-style wit was completely gone.

I finally sat down and watched the
Lord of the Rings trilogy. I would
have to say it was very well put
together. I would love to go on
location where they filmed that. I
would also like to have a house
made like Mr. Baggins little hooch!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly-
uncut and restored. Man, I wish
they still made movies like this.
Almost 3 hours of solid
entertainment, and not 1 computer
effect or superhero/mythical
fairytale character in sight. Just
hairy middle-aged guys with guns.
The way God intended.

Has anyone seen the new Indiana
Jones movie. I suspect it's going
to be a load of pants of the
highest order but I'm still going
to see it as my friend is a massive
fan of the franchise as most people
are. My personal opinion is that
George Lucas should be stopped. It
was bad enough with the new Star
Wars movies. I fear not even the
steady hand of Spielberg will be
enough. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I'm a bit bored of this trend of
"lets make a sequel to an 80s
movie". Just because there are a
lot of people that grew up in the
80s (Like me) doesn't mean we want
remakes done of every film we have
ever seen. Recently there has been
Rambo ,Rockey (both ok films),
incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones,
King Kong (ok, this one has been
made loads of times now, and was
last made in 1976)- no doubt many
more I cant think of.
I rekon it all started with Titanic which made so much money that investors couldn't ignore it. And lets be honest, its much easier to just re-hash something than have an original idea.
I think there are going to be more of these films soon. It wouldn't surprise me if ET, Stand by me (great film!), Cocoon (makes you old just watching it), Batteries not included, the A-Team, Thunder cats, all of them re-baked and re branded for today audience.

The Thundercats movie is already go
and the A-Team movie is an
inevitability. Also a sequel to
Point Break is in production and
The day the earth stood still
starring Keanu Reeves is out end of
the year. It's sad but true.

Isn't I am legend based on that old
60s movie also?

"Last man on Earth" starring the
great Vincent Price. This was
remade and called "Omega man"
starring Charlton Heston so "I am
Legend" is a remake of remake.

Sort of, all three movies are based
on the same book: I Am Legend.
The first adaption was in '64 with "Last Man On Earth", then Warner Brothers picked up the rights, and tried three times (so far.) They did "Omega Man" in '71, and "I Am Legend" in 2002 (cancelled due to budget overruns), then finally with "I Am Legend" with Will Smith in 2007.
The writter of the book, helped with the screenplay for the last version (I doubt he had a hand in the rewritten ending.)

Richard Matheson also wrote the
stories for The Thing, The
Incredible Shrinking Man, The Night
Stalker and Duel, along with a ton
of Twilight Zones and other sci-fi.
He's kind of the Elmore Leonard of
that genre. Good good, but not
great great.
