Have you seen a movie lately?

Well this could be a place to tell others about it. The idea is to post the name of a movie in theaters now and a review of it. Movies are an art form and this will give us a chance to look at film like that and share our views with each other. Hopefully it will help us to see some good ones and avoid some stinkers. With movie prices at $10 here it is best to avoid the bad ones!

I'll start with "There Will Be Blood" written by Paul Thomas Anderson and based on "Oil" by Upton Sinclair.

This movie is a story of the early American "oil Rush" it is the story of one man's desire to be the biggest oil man out there. This grizzly tale is harsh, brutal, touching, and well told. It is at it's heart a character study of the protagonist, Daniel Plainview. It's run time of 2 hours 35 minutes might seem like a big commitment, but it doesn't seem to last that long. Surprising, shocking and bold this film is a must see.

I really identified with the main character at points. Then not so much at other times.

It is nominated for 8 oscars and although I am not usually one to follow the critics, this movie is fabulous. I will be first in line to buy the DVD when it comes out.

"Juno" by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman

Juno MacGuff becomes a pregnant teenager after a one night affair with her best friend, track star Paulie Bleeker. Despite the premise, this movie is neither an average teen flick nor a quirky independent film. It is a heartfelt comedy about life and love. There is much to be found in terms of messages in this film.

Franklin, I just saw Atonement after the previous discussion, I was curious. I must agree with you. It seemed poorly done. I think the story was told with alot of scenes that could have been edited out and something more useful put in. It seemed disjointed. Thumbsdown from me.

Hi Virginia,
Juno was a wonderful movie. It was funny and poignant without being cliché. I like it a lot too.

Hi Keri,
Yeah that movie as just bad.

I saw Juno too - thought it was pretty god, would give it 7/10. A film I really liked was called The King of Kong: a fist full of quarters. I wrote a review of it here: h ttp://nds-emulation.com/2008/02/04/ king-of-kong-film-review/

I don't know if I mentioned this here yet. Cloverfield SUCKS! The movie is Blair witch meets Godzilla without any of the tongue in cheeks laughs. They shaky camera thing had my wife and I motion sick and wanting to vomit. The story was almost non-existent, an the characters were all very 2 dimensional. I really wish they'd put that whole "look at me I am so avante garde with the shaky camera stuff aside and just make a good movie. Pretentious gits.
There were some interesting special effects... I think... well heck I don't know... maybe not.. the camera was shaking too much to tell!!! Grrrrr... tripe.

I rarely go to the movies(dull going by yourself) so I catch most of them on DVD. 3:10 to Yuma was awesome, and I want to see the doc. Confederate States of America. No Country for Old Men is on my list.

franklin, you must go to the pictures alot, you lucky thing! My nearest cinema is about 30 miles away, and i dont get out much, and i'm quite poor(Oh dear! get the violins out) so I rarely see films until they turn up on the telly, or rent a DVD.
So, films seen this weekend, Domino: on DVD,complete pants! The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada: Good, managed to be bleak and beautiful at same time.
I also bought Control on dvd havent looked at it yet, but think it will be good

Well I am a lucky guy. My wife gets to buy discount movie tickets at her place of employment each week. We save about 40% on the cost of movies. It helps a lot. Also I love NetFlix. It's about the coolest thing in renting DVDs ever invented. I'll throw those movies in my queque. Thanks Tracy!

Hey Tracy, I'm unsure of the expression "complete pants" So I googled it. Is "nonsense" the correct answer?

Nevertheless...I stumbled upon this PBS site. It is set up as a game to test your knowledge of British slang, and keeps referring to a show called "White Teeth"

Franklin, you might appreciate this.

What about 3:10 to Yuma? Hav'net seen a new Western in quite a while and I found this to be rather enjoyable. The typical western violence is there, but the characters not being so black and white and one dimensional is what made the movie so interesting for me. I am curious now about that Jesse James movie. Anyone seen it -the one with Brad Pitt as Jesse James?

Nope Keri, I have seen neither.

It's called The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward John Ford, or something like that. It's supposed to be excellent, but very hard to find, when it was at theatres. Should be on DVD soon, if not already. Yuma was great, Russell Crowe outstanding as usual(he's starting to become the Aussie Tom Hanks). I hope there is a trend back to making westerns, as they can be the most poetic and beautiful pieces of cinema, if done right. It's not always just about the gunplay. refer to Sergio Leone.

I've seen clips of that (Jesse James thingly) on the Culture Show (BBC2,Sat)and it looks reely good so been looking out for it on DVD (and I don't even like westerns)

I got my Ford's mixed up. John Ford is the guy who directed all those John Wayne westerns. They did a great film(a sequel that was even better) called Jesse James back in the 40s. Had John Carradine(father of all those Carradine boy's )as Robert Ford. See it if you get a chance.

i wonder if henry ford was a relation. . .

just watched a western from 1994, "the cowboy way" with woody harrelson and keifer sutherland. it ain't "stagecoach" but it's an easy change of pace.
