Wisdom from fellow spirits!

I'll start with a few:

A painter paints the appearance of things, not their objective correctness, in fact he creates new appearances of things.
–Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

I've never believed in God, but I believe in Picasso.
-Diego Rivera

I dream a lot. I do more painting when I'm not painting. It's in the subconscious.
- Andrew Wyeth

I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.
-Mark Rothko

I certainly hope to sell in the course of time, but I think I shall be able to influence it most effectively by working steadily on, and that at the present moment making desperate efforts to force the work I am doing now upon the public would be pretty useless.
-Vincent van Gogh

Creationists make it sound as though a 'theory' is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night."
-Isaac Asimov

REFLECTIONS ON ART

"It is useful for an artist to know all forms of art which have preceded him. But must be very careful not to look for models. As soon as one artist takes on another as a model,he is lost.

Why should I try to imitate nature? I might just as well trace a perfect circle. What I have to do is utilise as best I can the ideas which objects suggest to me, connect, fust and colour in my way the shadows they cast within me,illuminate them from inside.
And since from necessity my vision is quite different from that of the next man, my painting will interpret things in an entirely manner."

PICASSO(c1948)

" Why should a tool diminish the value of art?

Might it not lead to new forms of art?

Optical technology has long been available for artists who want to use it; many have done so.
In my opinion, the use of optisal aids does not invalidate the quality of artwork. Talent and skill, the painter's eye and the artist's interpretation are always essential.

In fact, the artist who unites science and art enriches both, and should be cherished"

"If our titles recall the known myths of antiquity, we have used them again because they are the eternal symbols upon which we must fall back to express basic psychological ideas."

Remember crime against property is not real crime. People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of a drainpipe to gain access.

" If one set's heart on grasping as much as possible of what one sees, beit in science or art, the procedure is the same.

The scholar specialised in any field will find that the more he Knows the more he will have to learn, and never hope to reach full knowledge.

Besides full fnowledge would be death itself.
Art and science mean trying to understand.
Failure or success plays secondary role."

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web.

This has been my motto for the year! I think it's a great saying and really cuts to the chase.

"Still lifes are always ready to pose. They don't talk or get tired or need to eat. They possess all the qualities of form and color that are needed to keep a painter occupied for the rest of his life."

"I'm not trying to make paintings look like photos.
I want to make paintings using photos as a reference, the way painters did when photography was first invented."

You can't please everyone, so you may as well please yourself.

Paraphrasing a writer - Dion Fortune - rather than an artist, but still something that pops into my mind whenever I squint at something I'm working on and get caught up in the loop of thought which runs "maybe they'd prefer it if I just...."
